Pilgrimage to South Africa, Sept. 2012
I wasn't going. Really, I had no indication of going to South Africa in the many months since the Sophia Foundation posted the itinerary. I had other things to do and had even planned another photo shoot to LA and Bryce Canyon. That is until my phone rang at 6:30 AM on a Sunday morning. A fellow traveler had taken ill on the flight to NY and would not be continuing on. They would like someone to take her place and would I like to come. I would just have to get myself there. I had 45 minutes to decide before they boarded the plane to Johannesburg. Well, after turning on my computer, checking for available flights, scanning my mind as to what I'd need to do quite quickly, I called back and said... Yes!
While finishing up business at home for a day and a half, and then traveling from San Francisco to the far NE of South Africa taking 37 hours, I missed the first 3 days of traveling with the group.
Upon arriving in Johannesburg, I boarded a smaller jet for an hours flight up to Hoedspruit in the north. I was picked up there by Jason Turner of the Global White Lion Protection Trust, http://www.whitelions.org, where I would hook up with the rest of the group and where we would base our stay for the next week.
We were not allowed to take photos of the lions while here, but the warmth and hospitality of the people, the magic of the land and the purpose for which they exist is truly inspiring. In this venue I won't go into what the White Lion Trust is all about, but if you have the interest you can find out all about them as well as view images of some of the most beautiful creatures in the land. http://www.whitelions.org
The vitality, humility and strength of heart that this land and her people express is palpable and inspiring. My attempt here is to convey just a tiny bit of the huge impact that traveling to and being with the people and land and animals of a small part of NE South Africa had on all of us "pilgrims".
Thanks for visiting,
Steve
